the Stony Brook Concorso d’Eleganza  provided me with a great opportunity to visit my old alma mater and to see a large number of wonderful Italian machines. I was very impressed with the number of Alfas in attendance. I only wish I had the company of additional Alfisti from the New England region to make the trip! It was a wonderful event with a great mix of cars.

My journey started with a quick drive to the Long Island Ferry in New London for a very pleasant portage across the sound. It’s an enjoyable ride, and you can relax instead of dealing with the NYC traffic. Upon arrival at Orient Point, you get an opportunity to enjoy a lovely drive along the northern coast of Long Island, which brings you past the wineries on your way to Stony Brook. A little bit of wine tasting made it a very pleasant experience. Many folks don’t know that there are excellent wines to be found in this region.

This was the third year that we were invited to attend the Stony Brook Concorso, and it was the first opportunity for me to participate. The event is put on by the Center for Italian Studies at Stony Brook University. The group isn’t all that familiar with putting on car shows, but they did a wonderful job of bringing a large number of Italian cars together on a lawn across from the sports complex. They even supplied us with a nice continental breakfast and refreshments.

As it turned out, the location was surrounded by the three university buildings where I spent a large portion of my time during my four years attending the University. It brought back a lot of fine memories for me. It was also nice to see a few New York Alfa club members whom I hadn’t seen in a few years. I was sorry to be the only New England member in attendance, and would love to see if we can gather up a group to attend next year. My thoughts are that we could take the ferry together as a group and maybe even find some time to visit one or two of the many wineries.
