The AONE Autocross Survey Results

"You've overwhelmingly indicated a strong preference
for continuing our club's Autocross program"

Despite excellent weather for our June 1st AONE Autocross, and despite that fact that everyone who participated had a terrific time, we only had 18 drivers total, and only 12 of those were driving Alfas! It’s a significant expense for our club to rent the parking lot and secure insurance, and we need about 40 drivers to break even. Also, our autocross organizers put in a great deal of time and effort to make these events a success. So we conducted an online survey of our members to see how you all felt about autocrossing.

We were gratified that 55 members responded - it shows that a lot of you care! The results were very interesting and are summarized here, with some observations interspersed. Your comments were very thoughtful and helpful, and many of them are included below. Thank you for your participation!

Observations:
  ∙
40% had family obligations?  Yikes!  What is it with New England spouses?
∙ 26.7% had Alfas out of commission?  Yikes!  Over a quarter of our Alfas are off the road?
∙ Only 6.7% listed the date change as an issue, so that wasn't the problem.
∙ No one who tried it last year didn't have fun!!!

I'd start participating in AONE Autocrosses if…

I could get some classroom training before the event

4.4%

I could have an experienced driver show me the ropes

11.1%

There were "novice" classes I could compete in until I got my feet wet

Observations:
  ∙
It appears that additional support for less experienced drivers will be welcome.
∙ We were surprised that the idea of adding a cookout to the day's festivities wasn't important.

I would like to see the AONE autocross program continue.

85.5% (that's 47 of the 55 respondents) want the AONE Autocross program to continue.  That's
very reassuring, but you've got to come out and autocross!

  Additional comments from our members

  • Autocross is the best and I'll continue to participate as often as I can. First priority should be to get more participants. If we can't get to the 40 required to break even, a small increase in the fee would not be objectionable.

  • i really like autocrossing but my car hasn't been in proper shape to do it, and at the moment it's in another state. i'd likely do it next summer, though.

  • My schedule is hard to predict and I appreciate the club hosting these events. If I am able to participate, I will.
  • Perhaps the approach for future auto-x's would be to poll the members for a commitment to participate before action is taken. If 40 is the number needed and not reached, then do not proceed for 'lack of interest'. This way the club leaders cannot be criticized for sitting on event thumbs. But, for instance, if 20 respond they could be re-polled to see if they would be interested at at twice the cost so break-even could be reached. This, then, would require another decision to proceed on the part of the organizers. In either case, there should be enough interest from just Alfa members to cover the break-even. Then, as this year, other selective clubs could be invited to participate and any that did would be added income above the break-even.

  • I consider myself a fairly experienced autocrosser, would be willing to instruct, haven't autocrossed in a couple of years due to work, and a heavy motorcycle addiction. Let me know if I can help.

  • Altho I am not interested, there was a time when I did enjoy it, and I know that many of our members presently enjoy it. For those reasons, and for the fact that it gets people in their cars and "thinking" about using their Alfas competitively, I support the club spending its $ on this activity, even if we take a "loss". This is what our club money should be doing.

  • My son and I had a great time! It seems I don't have the time like I used to for attending the events. It may be worthwhile to have one event that is well promoted with driving school, barbecue. etc.  I think the classroom idea is great!

  • I don't care for Autocross, but as a new member I was going to go watch on 6/1 to meet other club members, although a family commitment popped up to prevent me from going. Perhaps hold Autocross events along with another attraction for non autocrossers to increase participation. You may even get some converts. I think any club event is a social event too and increasing attendees always makes it more fun for everyone.

  • I have attended AONE events in the distant past (1977-1986 when my Alfa Romeo was a running car). I hope it can continue.

  • The instructor and novice classes ideas are great! having "instructors" rides would probably increase the courage factor of beginners who otherwise would feel perhaps intimidated to participate.  I did participate in the National Convention 2004 autocross and it was a terrific experience. Please keep it up by securing a target 2 weeks window for next year and we either have commitment of 30 + to participate at a certain cut off time or we skip it next year. Count with me to help organize, run, instruct (oh Gosh I may regret this!) Thanks for the initiative! Thanks for the call to polls!

  • The problem for myself is family. The only time I get to spend with the wife and kids is on the weekends. if there was a day during the week, I could take time off from work and enjoy the company of the group

  • I thought the course was easy and great.  I think we should continue doing this. I would like to participate each time.

  • I'd like a faster course but the existing one is best for novices, and it's a good location. Consider partnering with other "vintage" clubs, creating vintage autocrossing not unlike the vintage racing we do. MG, lotus, P, Fiat, etc. It'd pay the rent and it's always fun to see the other cars.

  • I was Competition Chairman for the club in the 80's when we ran 2 track days with COM + 4-6 Autocrosses. The only way I was able to attract enough cars was to invite other clubs like OKRT (probably gone now) and SCCA. We also had a novice training program that helped people ease into it.

  • Joint participation with JANE or other clubs ought to be a simple way to attain a larger number of participants.

  • wonder if we had a championship series w/prizes if that might get folks to participate in both/all events to get points towards prizes

  • I was really looking forward to the autocross and was sorry to miss it. My wife wants to participate too (although I think last year's event contributed to my leaky rear axle.

  • I will participate at some point in the near future, I think the bbq and make it an outing may help. We had the email passed around and piggy back onto another club may be a good idea. I am not sure that the present alfa club roster and autox are in line due to demographics, day-day pressures etc.

  • A smokin' event! :-)

  • It' great that you make it convenient for your Boston and Manchester members. Not so much for your Vermont members.

  • i'm coming back with more cars ,friends and family. this o,x, hour glass course is good for multi levels and to teach young drivers skills with their car and the family alfa.

  • Just missed this one as I finished my winter repairs that very weekend. Having one further south would definitely make it more likely that I'd be able to attend.

  • When the club first started autocrossing (around 1974), I drove my Duetto in just about every event for about 6-7 years. I don't think it did any real harm to the car, but I tore up many tires. Also, you don't have to have your car "set up" for autocrossing to be competitive and have fun. It's all about good driving. I saw many old stock Giuliettas blow the doors off new (at the time) modified Alfettas, 1750s etc.

  • Never done it and probably would try it under the guidance of others.

  • I had a great time at my one and only autocross last year. I hope to do more (even though I own only lesser cars). Family obligations, and other events are the only reason I don't participate more often.

  • My kids just are not interested in coming to see cars race. They're too young to leave home alone. So it will be some time before I have the free time to xcross. When I can make a club event, I prefer to tour.

  • Do 2 events per year - advertise like crazy. Get pre-registered and make public who is signed up to generate more interest...so and so is going so I will too (plus peer pressure never hurt).

  • If it jibes with my schedule I'll always participate. I had a great time Father's Day 2007.

The Bottom Line

"Ask a hundred questions and you'll get a thousand answers."  Or however that goes.  Our club's a very diverse group and it shows!  "It's too far north."  "It's too far south."  "Make it more for novices."  "The course isn't fast enough."  But this is fine!  We also chose different Alfa models to buy, in lots of different colors, in various states of tune.  It's what makes it interesting!

The bottom line is that you've overwhelmingly indicated a strong preference for continuing our club's Autocross program.  Kevin Redden and the others who work so hard to stage our Autocross events will study your responses to the survey and adjust our program to make it the best that it can be.  And there's no reason you can't offer to pitch in and help (send Kevin an email).  But mainly it's up to you to come out and autocross!  See you at the next event!Tiny Quadrifoglio
