[Despite having moved from New
England to Alabama several years ago, Bob and Pauline Simonds are still
loyal AONE members and regular contributors (you may remember Bob’s
hilarious drawing of a "good ol’ boys" conversion of a Duetto in the
November 2004 issue). Here’s a recent letter from them (why does it take
an Alabaman to find a great Italian restaurant in New England?) —Ed.]
good news!
We now have an active
Alfa Romeo owners club covering Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi that
was chartered back in 2004. Known as the Deep South Alfa Romeo Club,
membership consists mainly of Louisiana and Mississippi residents,
although Alabama has four or five. Last year, I organized and ran a fun
rally that was enjoyed by all participants. The club insisted that we
make it an annual event, so this coming Spring it will take place in
April. Pauline and I will again be rallymasters.

An interior view of Pasquale’s Ristorante |
For six days late last summer,
Pauline and I were in New England visiting Pauline’s sister and husband
in Exeter, New Hampshire. One day, we drove over to Vermont to visit
friends and relatives we hadn’t seen for a year or two. It was great
driving on New England roads again, even if it wasn’t in an Alfa! On our
return to Exeter, we were looking for a place to have dinner and got off
at Exit 3 on Route 101 east of Manchester. The only restaurant sign
indicated two miles to Pasquale’s in Candia, New Hampshire. Being as
hungry as we were, we decided to try it. Located in the Birchwood Plaza,
we found Pasquale’s Ristorante, offering autentica cucina Italiana.

The Celone family waits to greet visitors to their restaurant |
We were in heaven! The owners,
Pasquale and Mayela Celone, had moved to the states seven years ago from
southern Italy and established their ristorante in Candia. Any of
you AONE members who desire true Italian food should definitely make it
a dining destination. The risotto is to die for! The ambiance
includes soft jazz in a room decorated with vineyard walls, Italian art,
and operatic poster prints. A fine selection of vino and
delicioso dolce make this dining experience worth the trip. Before
flying back to Alabama, we took Pauline’s sister and husband to
Pasquale’s for an early anniversary gift. Both are world travelers and
gourmet connoisseurs, and they gave Pasquale’s a 5-star rating!
Pasquale’s has a web site you may wish to check out:
www.pasqualeincandia.com. Boun appetito!
On a different subject, I thought you
might enjoy seeing a couple of pictures of my 1966 Duetto, which
celebrated its 40th birthday last year. Still looks and runs great!
You’ll notice the wire wheels, with Pirelli P6 195-60 tires, which were
specially made for my car by Dayton Wire Wheel Co. in Dayton, Ohio.
My best to all the members of AONE.
Y’all take care!
—
Bob Simonds
