The AONE January Thaw Tour Returns!

Sunday, January 7th

It's on!!!  Sunday is going to be sunny with a temp of around 50. Sounds like a January thaw to us! Not only that, but we've had some heavy rains of late, and salt won't even be an issue! So fire up your Alfa and take her for a cruise!

Directions to the start: We're meeting up in Newburyport, MA, on Boston's North Shore. Take Exit 57 from I-95 east on Route 113 toward Newburyport. In less than a mile, take a right into the Port Plaza shopping area. Take an immediate right into the Dunkin Donuts parking lot, where we'll meet up (and get "coffee" and take care of other business). Note: You'll see a Dunkin Donuts on the left before you get to Port Plaza; that's not the one.

Let's aim to meet at 10:30 am, with the first car off at 11:00. The tour should get us to lunch at around 12:30. Bring any car you want, but you get extra points for bringing your Alfa! Please send an email to webmaster@velocissima.com if you think you can make it so we can get an approximate head count. This should be fun—hope to see you there!

We’re going to give it another shot!  Sometimes, but not every year, we get a perfect weekend day for driving in January, and if/when that happens some Saturday or Sunday this year, we’ll be ready to pounce!

What’s the AONE January Thaw Tour? An excuse to get our Alfas out and give ‘em a little mid-winter exercise. A chance to drive some scenic roads you’ve perhaps never been on before. A little fun to boot, in the form of a simple gimmick rally. And an opportunity to have lunch at the end with a bunch of your Alfa pals.

The rally/tour will run roughly the same route as the January Thaw Tour we did back in 2002. If you were one of the dozen-or-so people on that tour and can remember anything about the itinerary, then you have a slight competitive advantage and you’re welcome to it! Without giving too much away, our tour will take advantage of the natural beauty of the New England coastline north of Boston. We’ve planned a 40-plus mile route with plenty of zigs and zags and lots of great scenery. We’ve identified (and personally tested) a restaurant with a terrific view where you can get anything from a sandwich to an elegant dinner.

The details regarding our starting time and location will be sent to you via email (What? Not receiving our occasional emails? Dash off a note to webmaster@velocissima.com!) as soon as we’ve determined that a thaw is about to occur, but basically it’ll go something like this: At a brief drivers’ meeting, you’ll be given printed directions for the tour/rally. The rally is designed for fun above everything else, and you just follow the directions and answer some questions along the way. Having a navigator (with a pencil) in your passenger seat to read off the directions is highly recommended, but not absolutely required. The first car will be sent off and the rest will follow at three-minute intervals. Roughly an hour and a half later (with good fortune), we’ll convene at the restaurant, compare notes, hand out a prize or two, and eat some chowdah!

Although this is an AONE event, if you don’t want to bring your Alfa out of hibernation, it’s okay to bring a Lesser Car. After all—it’s about Alfisti as well as Alfas! But if you bring your Alfa, you’ll get extra points added to your rally sheet and a better score! Contact Dave Pratt at 781-320-8208 or dave@dvpratt.com with any questions. Hope to see lots of you this year—it’s been a while since we’ve done this!Tiny Quadrifoglio
