"Il Giro Del Monadnock"
New Hampshire Road Tour
Saturday, October 7 |
Here are the itinerary and maps for Il Giro! They are large (~5MB) PDF
files, but if you are able, please download them, print them out, and bring them
with you:
It's
back for the third year! AONE members and Peterborough, NH
residents John Percival and Guilherme Bonatto have teamed up again to put
together another fabulous motor tour in the Monadnock region of southern New
Hampshire. Last year, we had eighteen Alfas come along on the drive, up from
a half dozen the year before! The participants all had a terrific time on a
tour that included quiet back roads, a stop for lunch, a couple of Alfa
photo ops, a little shopping, more back roads, some historic landmarks,
country estates, the McDowell Dam, horse farms, and finally a stop for ice
cream.
And this year Guilherme and John are
planning an even better, expanded Giro! We’re talking more back-roads
driving at the beginning of the day, and gathering at an Italian restaurant
for lunch along the way! You have three options for meeting up with the rest
of the gang:
1.
If you live in Massachusetts, Connecticut, or Rhode Island, you can meet up with
Dave & Vi Pratt at Papa Razzi Ristorante’s parking lot on Route 2 in Concord, MA
at 9:30. Based on previous years’ trips up to Il Giro Del Monadnock via these
back roads, they can testify that the route north is a pleasant one indeed. This
group will meet up with Guilherme in Hollis, NH for the next leg. Papa Razzi’s
is located on Route 2 westbound in Concord, MA (just before the Concord Rotary).
2. Or, if you live further north, you can meet up with Guilherme at Morin’s
Garden Center in Hollis, NH at 10:30am. Guilherme has mapped out a terrific
route that will take us though beautiful neighborhoods, up and down Federal Hill
into Milford, then via Savage Road / Isaac Frye Highway for a top-notch view of
the Monadnock chain, and finally descending a very twisty and narrow road into
Peterborough. Morin’s Garden Center is located at the intersection of NH Route
111 and Depot Road (off of the intersection of Routes 111 and 111A).
3. Or meet us in the main gathering spot as in previous years, the parking area
of Peterborough Plaza, at 11:30. From the east: Take NH Route 101 to
Peterborough. Past the intersection with Route 123, Peterborough Plaza will be
on your left, after the bridge. From the south: Take US Route 202 north past
Jaffrey to Peterborough. Turn right at a traffic light onto 101 heading east.
Peterborough Plaza will be on your right. From the west: Take Route 9 east,
which becomes 101 east in Keene. Stay on 101 to Peterborough, straight through a
set of lights (at intersection with 202 South). Peterborough Plaza will be on
your right.
When
we all arrive in Peterborough, our group will proceed to the Depot Square area
of downtown Peterborough, a destination spot for the Monadnock region. Depot
Square is framed by the confluence of two rivers in the center of Peterborough.
It provides an attractive setting for the Sharon Art Gallery plus several fine
restaurants and clothing boutiques. Our lunch destination will be
R.A. Gatto’s, a great
Italian Restaurant with excellent seafood options and reasonable lunchtime
prices.
After lunch, we’ll head out on the afternoon portion of the tour, when we’ll
discover what John and Guilherme have cooked up for the second half! Finally,
around 4pm, we’ll arrive back in Depot Square, where we can walk to Ava Maria
for chocolates or ice cream, and from there we can go our separate ways.
Peterborough is participating in the 11th annual
Open Studio Art Tour,
Saturday and Sunday—50 artists and 44 locations.
In
order to keep things under control, our tourmasters are limiting the event to
the first 25 cars to sign up—first come, first served! Important: We must
give R.A. Gatto’s a head count, so we will need you to register with Guilherme
by the end of the day on Thursday, October 5th, with the exact number of
reservations. To register, contact Guilherme at 603-924-7608 (home),
603-860-9705 (cell), or via email at
bbonatto@verizon.net. If you call and get a message, please leave your
name and number so that Guilherme can return your call to confirm your entry.
Include your phone number, your plan about where you will join (1, 2, or 3 from
above), and whether you are going to have lunch with us at Gatto’s. Do it now so
you don’t end up on the waiting list!
So reserve Saturday, October 7th (rain date Sunday, the 8th; Gatto’s would be
closed but there are a lot of other options for lunch in Peterborough) on your
calendars and sign up pronto! See you there!
