Three's a Crowd
| P |
erhaps it was the 90+ degree temps, or perhaps it was the threat of a thunderstorm popping up, but the turnout for the June Monthly Meeting was, shall we say, a tad underwhelming. Just three Alfisti showed up at Widow Fletcher’s Tavern, and George Dolak’s ’78 Spider was the only Alfa. Pete Hanson didn’t relish dampening his Giulia Spider (which is a little surprising, since he drove it down from Maine for the monsoon edition of Tutto Italiano two years ago, where he was rewarded with Best of Show). And your faithful Editor didn’t relish an hour-and-a-half drive in an Alfa on superhighways in 90-degree heat, so he brought an air-conditioned lesser car. So kudos to George for being the bravest of the bunch.
After waiting half an hour for others to arrive, we sheepishly canceled the upstairs table the club had reserved and took a booth in the restaurant. We sucked down a few iced teas and sampled a few things from the menu, all quite good. The Tavern is an attractive, rustic place with excellent food and service—sorry more of you didn’t partake.
The intimate assemblage did give the three of us a good chance to learn more about our respective automotive histories, and quite a few Alfa rescue stories were traded. We had an enjoyable, leisurely time and ended up spending well over two hours before braving the heat (and, yes, a couple of rain showers) and heading home.
