Mount Washington “Climb to the Clouds” Vintage Hillclimb
Saturday & Sunday
, July 9-10

This is certainly a year packed with driving events for us AONE members. In addition to our "usual" events, we are also participating in others located within a reasonable drive. One such is the Mount Washington Vintage Hillclimb, scheduled for the weekend after the 4th of July, which promises to be a fun feast of vintage racers, mountain views and classic car shows all rolled into one. The event last year was supposed to have been a "one-off" thing, but it was so successful that the organizers, the VSCCA, are making it an annual affair. The action takes place at the base of the Mount Washington Auto Road, just north of Jackson, NH on Route 16. Check out the event web site.

Accommodations are on your own, but there are many motels, inns and resorts in the area. Check the New Hampshire Tourism web site  for lodging or camping info. Some of our members have already decided to make it a special three-day weekend and are treating their significant others to a stay at one of New Hampshire’s finest B&B’s, The Inn at Thorn Hill. This inn is considered by many to be one of the top fifty B&B’s in the country.

As a club, we will be meeting on Saturday morning around 9 am at the base parking area (ask where the Alfas are) and following the program described below. There are preliminary plans to do a mountain driving tour with the Porsche 356 Club on Sunday morning. Stay tuned for updates. Let Kevin Murphy (kevin@kmurphyslaw.com or 508-879-1881) know if you plan to attend, and the day you plan to arrive (some of us are going up on Friday, the 8th).

  • On Saturday, July 9, the VSCCA Vintage Hillclimb practice will run from 8:00 am to 11:30 am. Saturday also features the AACA Granite Region Vintage Car Exhibition starting at 9:00 am with awards presented at 2:30 pm. At 3:00 pm, the field heads to Jackson Village for "Vintage Viewing and BBQ’ing", open to the public from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. This event is a featured event in the Jackson Chamber of Commerce annual brochure.

  • On Sunday, July 10, the VSCCA Vintage Hillclimb is scheduled from 8:00 am to 11:30 am. This year the White Mountain Driving Tours will be ongoing throughout the day, and we will be joining up with them. Can’t wait to see those northern mountain roads again!

So pack up the kids and your bathing suits and head to New Hampshire! (For even more fun, leave the kids and bathing suits home.) If you’re looking for a great early-summer weekend outing, this is it!Tiny Quadrifoglio

South Shore Mystery Rally
and July Monthly Meeting
Sunday, July 17

A scene from a previous year’s South Shore Mystery Rally
with the Atlantic Ocean in the background

After a hiatus last year to make room on our schedule for Giulietta Giubilee, the South Shore Mystery Rally is back! The date is set as July 17th for this year’s fling. We call it a "Mystery Rally" because we have no idea where our enigmatic rallymasters (AONE member Peter Marino and his wife Carole) will be sending us. They’ll be setting up this fun tour with directional instructions and questions about points of interest along the way. The standing of each rally team will be based on the total time taken to make the drive, total distance traveled, and the number of questions answered correctly. So it’s kind of a loose TSD rally, with plenty of chances to stop and admire the scenic South Shore attractions (which usually include a little coastline)!

In previous years, we’ve had nice turnouts in the dozen-car range. Everyone had lots of fun, and this year we’re hoping to do even better, as people discover what an enjoyable time this really is. Again, we want to stress that this is a FUN rally—it’s not like a SCCA road rally.

The Rally route will traverse through scenic sections of southeastern Massachusetts (right now, that’s all we know). It will take about two hours to complete, and when it’s over we’ll gather for a picnic at Castello di Lesko, which always seems to be mysteriously located near the rally’s destination. Here, ritual dictates that we kibitz and complain about the Peter’s cryptic rally directions, while he and Carole tally up the results. This time, the post-rally cookout is going to serve double duty as the dining portion of the AONE July Monthly Meeting, so we’ll get a chance to kick around ideas for other club events as well.

The first car will be off at 11:00 AM, so try to get there around 10:30. The entry fee is a mere $10 per car, which will pay for food and prizes for the "winners". This is a real family event, and we highly recommend at least having someone in the passenger seat to read off the instructions and help the driver decipher them. To help Peter, Carole, and Tom organize the event and especially plan the food, please contact Tom Lesko at 781-749-9132 or tmlesko@comcast.net to register or with any questions.

Directions to the rally start (Sullivan Tire, 902 Plain Street, Marshfield, MA): From any direction, find your way onto Route 3, the main highway connecting Boston and Cape Cod. Take Exit 12 onto Route 139 East (toward Marshfield). Look for Sullivan Tire in about 7/10 mile. See map.

We’ve had a grand time at prior South Shore Rallies—now that summer’s finally with us, why not join us this year!Tiny Quadrifoglio

Tech Session at AlphaCars
and August Monthly Meeting
Sunday, August 14

If you’re "Always Looking For Another", as "they" say about Alfisti in general, this Tech Session and August Monthly Meeting is for you! Dmitry and the crew at AlphaCars in Boxborough will be welcoming us to the use of their facilities for our meeting and will be putting on a special tech session for us as well. Specifically, they will be covering "Pre-purchase Inspection Strategies" for used cars, including what can be done with the use of a lift and what can be done without. Imagine how useful this will be the next time you suddenly hear about that Alfa barn-find in the next town over! Or when a small ad in the local rag yields a gem to be checked out! I’ll definitely be all ears at this session. Then again, my wife does say I have "selective hearing", but that’s another story. We’ll also cover upcoming events, including a final check on the big Watkins Glen Alfa-oriented event in early September and other events in the months ahead.

So plan on meeting us there on Sunday, August 14 at 12 noon! Directions will be provided in the next issue, or you can check out the AlphaCars web site at  for a map and directions. We’ll be arranging for some tasty munchies and beverages to slake your lunchtime hunger. Bring your Alfa, for gosh sakes—it’s summer and AlphaCars is located on a very nice road. Be there!Tiny Quadrifoglio

Alfa Romeo To Be Featured Marque at
Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival
September 8-11

This is the Alfa 8C2900 that won the
1948 Grand Prix held at the Glen

AONE members are planning a caravan! So far, nearly a dozen AONE members (and some spouses) are signed up to caravan out to Watkins Glen, NY on September 8th to participate in the largest event featuring ALFA in the Northeast since our highly successful Giulietta Giubilee last year. ALFA is the "Tour de Marque" for this year’s Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival, and members who sign up will participate in many special events, including a tour and lunch at Watkins Glen International Speedway, parade laps on the track, three laps of the old 6.6-mile long road course, and special reserved parking in downtown Watkins Glen for the Vintage Race Re-enactment. All of these events occur beginning at 8:00AM on Friday, September 9th—hence the need to get out there on the 8th.

On Saturday the 10th and Sunday the 11th are the SVRA Vintage Races at the track, which is a major take-in with many different classes competing wheel-to-wheel, and The Collier Cup. There will also be many vendors from all over the country to tug at your purse-strings, and a classic car show in which those participating in the prior day’s ALFA event are invited to show their cars (and it gives you great parking while at the track!).

As if all of this weren’t enough to give you a total overdose of your favorite obsession, the picture-perfect setting of Watkins Glen, crammed with old (and not so old) sports cars and racers, beautiful twisty roads dotted with wineries, lakes, and waterfalls make for a heady brew, so you’d better bring someone sensible with you to make sure you come back!

The Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival is a terrific weekend of vintage racing and other forms of celebration, all held in historic and scenic Watkins Glen, NY. It’s always a real happening, and this year Alfa Romeo is the featured marque! Attendance will be high and accommodations are filling up fast, so click here to download a brochure (2MB PDF file) and make your plans!

One last thing—the New York Club tells us that they have twelve cars committed to this event (and more coming), so there’s another reason to make the trip! Your club needs you to help make AONE….A-ONE!Tiny Quadrifoglio

"Il Giro Del Monadnock"
New Hampshire Road Tour
Saturday, October 1

It's back for an encore! Fellow AONErs and Peterborough residents John Percival and Guilherme Bonatto have teamed again to put together what promises to be a another fabulous motor tour in the Monadnock region of southern New Hampshire. Organized as a last-minute event last year, the dozen or so participants all had a terrific time on a tour that included quiet back roads, a stop for lunch, a couple of Alfa photo ops, a little shopping, more back roads, some historic landmarks, country estates, the McDowell Dam, horse farms, a basket-making shop, more back roads, and finally a stop for ice cream. It was a well-planned, interesting route and this year's variant promises to be even better!

There will be a lot more details forthcoming, but for now reserve October 1st (rain date the 8th) on your calendars!
