AONE
Caravan to the
New
England Air Museum Car Show

Well start off by rendezvousing in
Sturbridge, Massachusetts for a scenic trip down into Connecticut, traveling entirely on
sparsely trafficked secondary roads in the northeastern corner of the state.
What could be better than a late Spring early Sunday morning romp through the
country with a bunch of Alfas? The route
takes us through woods and past lakes, farms, and tobacco sheds and is really quite
pleasant. Its a 42-mile itinerary thats actually a fairly direct route between
Sturbridge and Bradley, and beats any Interstate route hands-down.
If
youve never been to the New England Air Museum, youre in for a real treat. The
museum features many rare and special planes. It really is
an incredible place—when we went three years
ago, we all swore that we'd go back and spend more time.
Well, now's our chance! More details can be found at the
New England Air Museum web site. You can stay at the museum as long as youd like before heading
back. For the return trip, weve planned another route that parallels the trip down a
little further south and is just as pleasant and scenic, dumping you out on I-84 just
below the CT-MA border.
The Agenda:
8:00 - Meet in Sturbridge, find coffee and other facilities
8:30 - Leave Sturbridge on the scenic tour
9:45 - Arrive at the Air Museum
10:00-3:00 - Enjoy the car show and explore the museum
5:00 - Museum closes
Directions: Our launch pad will be the parking lot of the Oxhead Tavern in Sturbridge, MA (part of the Sturbridge Host Hotel). To get there from the north, take the Mass Turnpike (I-90) to Exit 9 onto Route I-84. From the south, take Route I-84 East. Take Exit 3B on I-84, which ramps you onto Route 20 West. The Oxhead Tavern driveway is approximately one mile down on the right, between McDonalds & Burger King. Watch for the sign. (Please note: These directions are three years old but are believed to still be accurate; beware.) For the route down through Connecticut and back, printed directions will be handed out.
For those who wish to attend but would rather just meet us at the museum for the car show, plan on being there at 9:45. Check the New England Air Museum web site for directions or use the map below:

The car show will start at 10 am. There is a mere $5 per car
charge that includes entrance to the museum for the driver and all
passengers (we think)! Visitors will be treated to a collection of antiques,
classics, special interest cars, sports cars and street rods. Dash plaques will
be awarded to the first 200 cars. Participants and spectator choice awards will
be made. A DJ will be on hand for your enjoyment.
For lunch, your options will be an onsite caterer, packing your own lunch, or going to one of the nearby restaurants. There's
a bit more info at the
4C NEAM Car Show web site. This is going to be fun!![]()
The June Monthly All-Member Meeting Heads North (Second
Attempt)
Our
June Monthly Meeting will be held at 12:00 noon on Sunday, June 12th at Widow
Fletcher’s Tavern in Hampton, New Hampshire.
Yes, we know—this is the same place as last month, but last month’s
powwow didn’t transpire, due to the threat of severe weather. (Some places got
it, some didn’t, but coastal NH did, so it looks like we made the right call.)
Located in the heart of Hampton Village, this 300-year-old establishment is famous for its fresh seafood, steaks, and great appetizers. The seafood chowder is a first place award winner, and the atmosphere is cozy and comfortable. There’s also a Sunday brunch in which we can partake. For more info on our hosts for the June gathering, visit the Widow Fletcher's Tavern web site. The phone number is 603-926-8800.
We had nice turnouts for our first two monthly meetings, and this time will give all of you northern New Englanders an easy chance to attend a club gathering. We’re looking forward to hanging out with a bunch of AONErs from New Hampshire, Maine, and northeastern Massachusetts who don’t often get an opportunity join in so easily!
|
|
The idea of these meetings is that they be informal gatherings to which you can drive your Alfa, grab a little chow, talk over ideas for club activities, talk Alfas, eyeball Alfas, and generally have an enjoyable time with your Alfa buds on a regular, scheduled basis. The location of our meetings varies, in order to give everyone in the region a chance to attend some of the get-togethers without having to drive too far. Next month, we’ll be back out west of Boston.
Though it’s not required, we’re asking that you contact Kevin Murphy at kevin@kmurphyslaw.com or 508-879-1881 to let him know you’re coming so that we can get an approximate head count. Perhaps after lunch/brunch, we’ll all take a cruise up and down scenic Route 1A along the ocean! Be there at Widow Fletcher’s!
Directions: Take I-95 to Exit 2 (For Route 101 East, Exeter, Hampton Beach). After the toll booth, bear left onto Route 101 East toward Hampton, and then left onto Route 1 North. Widow Fletcher’s is about a half mile up on the right. Parking is in the back—we’ll be in an upstairs dining room.

Collings Foundation Auto & Aircraft Collection
Open House
Hey,
it’s Fathers Day Weekend—you call the shots!
The Collings Foundation’s collection is one of the unsung wonders of the Boston area. On display are over sixty-five antique automobiles and race cars that include the 1932 Duesenburg Dual-Cowl SJ Phaeton owned by Fred Duesenburg; a 1940 V-16 Cadillac Limousine custom built for Al Capone; a Springfield, MA built 1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Phaeton; and an Indy Car driven by Mario Andretti. The aircraft collection includes a rare original 1909 Bleriot Model XI; a WWII vintage Fiesler FI-156 Storch; and a 1943 Cessna UC-78 that was formerly flown by Revere Airways. Also on display will be five micro-cars owned by the Charles Gould Foundation. These three-wheeled cars were produced by former aircraft manufacturers Messerschmidt, Heinkel, and BMW. In addition, the Charles River Radio Controllers will be displaying and flying both powered and un-powered radio control aircraft on the Foundation’s grounds.
The gates will be open on both Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Donation for admission to see the collection and display is $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for children under 12. The Collings Foundation is located at 137 Barton Road in Stow, MA near Lake Boon. Directions and more information can be found on the Collings Foundation web site or by calling 978-562-9182.
Northeast Exotic Car Show
The
New England Viper Club will be sponsoring the second annual Exotic Car Show
Car clubs that have been invited include the New England and NY/CT Dodge Viper Chapters, the New England Ferrari club, Lamborghini Northeast, Porsche / North Country, Acura NSX, Austin Healey / New England, BMW / White Mountain Chapter, Aston Martin New England, MG / Greater Boston, the New England Pantera Club, and Jaguar Association of New England. So there should be quite an assortment of exotic automobiles!
The Brewery will be open to tour, and food and refreshments will be available. You can check out the brewery web site for panoramic views of the grounds and directions. WBCN and WZLX radio stations will be covering the event, and live bands have donated their time and will play, so it should be quite a show.
Gates open at 8:30am and the show opens to the public at 10:00. There’ll be Show ‘n’ Shine from 10:00-12:00 and judging from 12:00-1:00pm, with the awards presentation from 1:00-2:00. There’s a new web site on the show where you can get more info and pre-register online. Please contact Jeff Torrey of the New England Viper Club at 603-382-3795 or jeff@neviperclub.org. This event is growing!
Mount Washington “Climb to the Clouds” Vintage
Hillclimb
Saturday & Sunday
This
is certainly a year packed with driving events for us AONE members.
Accommodations are on your own, but there are many motels, inns and resorts in the area. Check the New Hampshire Tourism web site for lodging or camping info. Some of our members have already decided to make it a special three-day weekend and are treating their significant others to a stay at one of New Hampshire’s finest B&B’s, The Inn at Thorn Hill. This inn is considered by many to be one of the top fifty B&B’s in the country.
As a club, we will be meeting on Saturday morning around 9 am at the base parking area (ask where the Alfas are) and following the program described below. There are preliminary plans to do a mountain driving tour with the Porsche 356 Club on Sunday morning. Stay tuned for updates. Let Kevin Murphy (kevin@kmurphyslaw.com or 508-879-1881) know if you plan to attend, and the day you plan to arrive (some of us are going up on Friday, the 8th).
On Saturday, July 9, the VSCCA Vintage Hillclimb practice will run from 8:00 am to 11:30 am. Saturday also features the AACA Granite Region Vintage Car Exhibition starting at 9:00 am with awards presented at 2:30 pm. At 3:00 pm, the field heads to Jackson Village for "Vintage Viewing and BBQ’ing", open to the public from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. This event is a featured event in the Jackson Chamber of Commerce annual brochure.
On Sunday, July 10, the VSCCA Vintage Hillclimb is scheduled from 8:00 am to 11:30 am. This year the White Mountain Driving Tours will be ongoing throughout the day, and we will be joining up with them. Can’t wait to see those northern mountain roads again!
Looks like fun—see you there!
Alfa Romeo To Be Featured
Marque at
Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival
September 8-11
|
|
AONE members are planning a caravan! So far, nearly a dozen AONE members (and some spouses) are signed up to caravan out to Watkins Glen, NY on September 8th to participate in the largest event featuring ALFA in the Northeast since our highly successful Giulietta Giubilee last year. ALFA is the "Tour de Marque" for this year’s Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival, and members who sign up will participate in many special events, including a tour and lunch at Watkins Glen International Speedway, parade laps on the track, three laps of the old 6.6-mile long road course, and special reserved parking in downtown Watkins Glen for the Vintage Race Re-enactment. All of these events occur beginning at 8:00AM on Friday, September 9th—hence the need to get out there on the 8th.
On Saturday the 10th and Sunday the 11th are the SVRA Vintage Races at the track, which is a major take-in with many different classes competing wheel-to-wheel, and The Collier Cup. There will also be many vendors from all over the country to tug at your purse-strings, and a classic car show in which those participating in the prior day’s ALFA event are invited to show their cars (and it gives you great parking while at the track!).
As if all of this weren’t enough to give you a total overdose of your favorite obsession, the picture-perfect setting of Watkins Glen, crammed with old (and not so old) sports cars and racers, beautiful twisty roads dotted with wineries, lakes, and waterfalls make for a heady brew, so you’d better bring someone sensible with you to make sure you come back!
The Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival is a terrific weekend of vintage racing and other forms of celebration, all held in historic and scenic Watkins Glen, NY. It’s always a real happening, and this year Alfa Romeo is the featured marque! Attendance will be high and accommodations are filling up fast, so click here to download a brochure (2MB PDF file) and make your plans!
One last thing—the New York Club tells us that they have
twelve cars committed to this event (and more coming), so there’s another reason
to make the trip! Your club needs you to help make AONE….A-ONE!
