t hadn’t been predicted but, as of this writing, April 10th, the day we held our April Monthly Meeting, turned out to be the nicest one of the year so far! This time, we headed south (South Attleboro, MA, to be precise) to the Memphis Roadhouse, chosen for its reputation of serving up an excellent array of southern barbecue.
As all the Alfas began to roll in a little before noon, every top was folded back (at least among the Alfas whose tops did fold back). We hung out in the parking lot for a while, soaking up the warm sun and popping open several of the hoods. (I’m not sure why we do that—it’s some sort of instinctive quirk that Alfisti have.) Finally, the aromas emanating from the BBQ smokers became such that hunger overwhelmed our Alfanaticism and we went inside.
The Roadhouse staff was ready for us, and we were seated at a nice, long table in the rear of the restaurant, an area that we had to ourselves. We ordered up batches of ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork, steaks—you know, health food. Many commented that it was some of the best barbecue they’d ever stumbled across.
In attendance were Kevin Murphy (whom we can thank for finding the Roadhouse and making all the arrangements), Gary Hoyt, Marc Olivier, Lou Franceschina, the John Torellos (Sr. and Jr.), Tomm Connors, Carol Clarke, Walter Powers, Peter Walker, Gene Durso, Tom Freiberger, Tom Letourneau, and Dave Pratt.
Absent this time was President Tom Lesko, who reported being under water with: 1) income tax preparation, and 2) water. Seems that someone(?) had inadvertently left a tap open overnight and flooded out the computer system and some other things on their lower living level. Undaunted, we carried on courageously without him, discussing such upcoming events as the Glynn Motorsports tech session, Tutto Italiano, the Mount Washington Hillclimb, and the Watkins Glen vintage festival. But mainly we ate barbecue.
When we emerged around 2pm, the day had gotten even nicer, with the temperature pushing past 70 degrees. A number of us had traveled some respectable distances (again, four New England states were represented), so we all had some very pleasant Spring driving ahead of us as we motored homeward. Of course, we had to spend some more time opening hoods, admiring wheels, asking technical questions, and shooting the breeze first. Hey—it’s who we are.
For next month’s meeting, we’re headed north—check out the Events section for details. We hope to see a lot of our New Hampshire and Maine members be able to make that one. Mark your calendars for May 15th—see you there!
