SCCA Frost Heave Rally
If you want to run a really good, low-key road rally over lots of scenic (and probably snow-covered) back roads, in whatever vehicle you deem appropriate, then the SCCA Frost Heave Rally is for you! Tom Letourneau says that this is an extremely beginner-friendly TSD event, using diagrams of intersections and giving mileages to all turns. Leaving out of Loudon, NH, speeds are all at or below legal limits. There's even a novice school on Friday night.
Obviously, this event isn't for pristine classic Alfas, but bring that family sport ute and go for it! With more snow predicted in the near future, everyone's hoping that the roads will have something other than pavement and dirt to drive on.
There's also a "Slip'n'Slide" RallyCross the next day (Sunday) that you can participate in or observe. RallyX can be a little demanding on one's vehicle, depending on the course. (Some people now prepare their cars almost to the level of Pro Rallye cars.) You wouldn't be disappointed, even if you just went to be a spectator! Tom reports that some of the roads to be traversed are ones that he was originally going to incorporate in our Giulietta Giubilee Rally until he was issued the edict, "NO DIRT ROADS!". Now everyone can see just how great these off-the-beaten-path dirt roads are!
For more info, visit the Northeast Region SCCA web site or contact their RallyX Chairman Scott Beliveau at 603-527-2342 (days), 603-524-4305 (nights and weekends), or beliveau@aavid.com. You can also download the registration form as a PDF file.
Monthly
All-Member Meetings To Start!
Yes, you read that right! At a recent meeting of your Board of Directors to plan this year’s club events, it was decided to re-institute all-member monthly meetings! They will be held at 12:00 noon on the third Sunday of every month. The idea is to make them informal gatherings to which you can drive your Alfa, grab a little brunch/lunch, talk over ideas for club activities, talk Alfas, eyeball Alfas, and generally have an enjoyable time with your Alfa buds on a regular, scheduled basis.
|
|
The location of our meetings will vary, in order to give everyone throughout our expansive region a chance to attend some of the get-togethers without having to drive too far (although, if you’re driving an Alfa, there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with that). The plan is to rotate the venues south of Boston, west of Boston, and north of Boston (we’ve yet to locate a spot east of Boston that’s sufficiently dry).
The first of our monthly meets will take place at noon on Sunday, March 20th at the Papa Razzi Ristorante in Concord, MA (a west of Boston venue). Papa Razzi is easy to find—it’s on Route 2 westbound, just before the Concord rotary. (If you’re coming from the west, you’ll spot Papa Razzi on your left; take a left at the light.)
So break out of the winter doldrums by joining your fellow Alfisti for the inaugural AONE Monthly All-Member Meeting! This one will also serve as a kick-off meeting to give us a chance to talk up everything we’ve got planned for this year (and there’s a lot!). We’ve reserved a room at Papa Razzi for the affair. Though it’s not required, we’re asking that you contact Kevin Murphy at kevin@kmurphyslaw.com or 508-879-1881 to let him know you’re coming so that we can get an approximate head count.
No one’s expected to attend every meeting—that’s a given. The idea is that, once a month, every month, you’ll be able to get together with like-minded Alfa lovers in a low-key setting any time you choose to. You know—like a club! It could be a nice habit to get into. See you in Concord!

VSCCA Spring
Sprints
at Lime Rock Park
The VSCCA season kicks off with the Spring Sprints, a low-key vintage racing event at one of the nation’s most scenic race tracks. The club prides itself on its emphasis on sportsmanship rather than race-winning, but “low-key” doesn’t really describe the on-track action. There are upwards of a hundred great old race cars slugging it out just like in days gone by. For more info, visit www.limerock.com and www.vscca.org. No crowds, easy parking, lots of great historic cars to admire up close and on the race track. It’s a fine way to spend a Friday and/or Saturday!
AONE Tech Session and Swap
Meet
at Glynn Motorsports
And the beat goes on! Glynn Motorsports will be hosting AONE’s first Tech Session and Swap Meet of the year on April 23rd beginning at 10AM. We always get a great turnout of Alfas and Alfisti at these events, so bring yours and whatever parts or Alfabilia you might have scattered about—we’ll also be holding a swap meet in the parking lot.
|
|
As with our recent Glynn Motorsports gatherings, rather than hold a tech session on a specific topic, we’ll all converge in the center of the shop and engage Paul in an unscripted Question and Answer session. Everyone finds this format enjoyable and educational and Paul likes it too, so we’ll be doing it this way again. We’ll all assemble at around 11:00 and Paul will field questions from the group, so consider it your opportunity for Alfa enlightenment!
Glynn Motorsports is located at 120 Rear Haverhill Street, Rowley, MA 01909. Directions: From I-95 take Route 133 East toward Rowley. In three miles, go straight through a traffic light crossing Route 1. Proceed 1.5 mile and turn right at the sign for Glynn Motorsports. Proceed warily as you get close, since it’s easy miss, although we’ll try to have our Alfa banners out front. There is a large lot to park and show your parts, display your car, and wander around among the Alfas.
The doors will open as usual at 10AM—AONE will be supplying coffee and pastries. Later on, some gustatory digestibles befitting us connoisseurs of Italian macchina will be provided (donations to help defray the cost will be gratefully accepted). See you there!
Alfa Romeo To Be Featured
Marque at
Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival
This is an early heads-up, but one that bears heeding. The Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival is a terrific weekend of vintage racing and other forms of celebration, all held in historic and scenic Watkins Glen, NY. It’s always a real happening, and this year Alfa Romeo is the featured marque! Attendance will be high and accommodations are filling up fast, so click here to download a brochure (2MB PDF file) and make your plans! You can also get more info at the official Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival web site. Stay tuned—there’ll probably be an AONE caravan out to the Glen!
