Third Annual South Shore Mystery Rallye

Sunday, July 20

Back for the third year running! The date is set as July 20th for this year’s rallye down on the Massachusetts South Shore. We call it a “Mystery Rallye” because, as usual, we have no idea what’s going to be happening until it happens. AONE member Peter Marino and his wife Carole are our enigmatic rallyemasters, and will set up this fun tour with directional instructions and questions about points of interest along the way. The standing of each rallye team will be based on the total time taken to make the drive, total distance traveled, and the number of questions answered correctly. So it’s kind of a loose TSD rallye, with plenty of chances to stop and admire the scenic South Shore coastline!

Last year, we had a nice turnout of around a dozen cars. Everyone had lots of fun, and this year we’re hoping to do even better, as people discover what a fun time this really is. Again, we want to stress that this is a fun rallye—it’s not like a SCCA Road Rally.

The Rallye route will traverse through scenic sections of southeastern Massachusetts (right now, that’s all we know). It will take about two hours to complete. At the destination, we’ll gather for a picnic. Last year, this was at President Tom Lesko’s house, but this year who knows where we’ll end up! In any event, we’ll undoubtedly kibitz and complain about the Peter’s cryptic rallye directions, while he and Carole tally up the results. The entry fee is a mere $10 per car, which will pay for food and prizes for the “winners”.

The first car will be off at 11:00 AM, so try to get there before 10:45. This is a real family event, and we highly recommend at least having someone in the passenger seat to read off the instructions and help the driver decipher them. As the date of the event gets closer, watch this page for the final details, and we’ll be sending out notices to the AONE email list (sign up now if you’re not on it by sending an email to webmaster@velocissima.com). To help Peter and Carole organize the event and especially plan the food, please contact them directly at 781-335-3202 or Alfa02189@peoplepc.com (or webmaster@velocissima.com if you can’t get through) to register or with any questions.

Directions to the rallye start (AutoZone, 555 Washington Street, Weymouth, MA, 781-331-2770):

We had a grand time at last year’s South Shore Rallye—now that summer’s finally here, why not join us this year!   Tiny Quadrifoglio

AONE Annual Gathering at the
New Hampshire Vintage Celebration

Saturday, August 2

It’s race time again, gang! July 30th - August 3rd are the dates for this year’s annual New Hampshire Vintage Celebration, a weekend of Vintage Sports Car Racing at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon. The celebration runs from Wednesday through Sunday—here’s what’s going on:

• Vintage racing on the oval on Wednesday & Thursday
• On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, vintage racing sports cars and motorcycles take to the road circuit.
• Sunday features the Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant Open Vehicle Show and the Elegance Car Show

AONE will again set up its canopy in the infield with our banner on it so that you can find us (it is a big place). As we’ve done the last two years, we’ll be firing up the BBQ grill and have free food and drinks available for club members and guests.

Paul Glynn in his Giulietta (featured on last month's cover)
about to overtake a lesser car at last year's NH Vintage Celebration

This is a great opportunity to see vintage Alfas and many other sports cars and motorcycles on (and off) the track. There may be three or four AONE members racing (among them Paul Glynn with his Giulietta and Bob Russell with his Sprint Zagato), so come cheer them on! Bring a chair if you like and stroll through the infield amongst the beautiful vintage cars and bikes.

Get yourself an early start Saturday, drive up to Loudon, buy your infield tickets ($20 for the whole weekend), and look for our Alfa banners in the pit/infield area! Consider finding a place to flop Saturday night and taking in the concours and more racing on Sunday! For more info, check out the NHIS web site at www.nhis.com, or contact Tom Lesko at 781-749-9132 or tmlesko@comcast.net. And be sure to check www.velocissima.com and the next issue of Velocissima for late-breaking news!

Last year, we had a fine turnout of 25 or more Alfisti and had a great time! There’s something special about watching these 40-, 50-, and 60-year-old sports cars racing as if they were new—a time warp! Come on up!   Tiny Quadrifoglio
