Well, it was a grand time! Italian Car Day at the Larz Anderson Museum of Transportation in Brookline, Massachusetts keeps getting a little bigger every year, and when we get a good weather forecast as we did this year, it puts it over the top! It was a record-breaking show with nearly 2000 spectators. By midday, we counted 50 Alfas in the field (and there were a lot more parked out on the street). In total, there were well over 200 Italian cars gathered for display, with a wide assortment of marques and models present. (There was, of course, the usual preponderance of red Ferrari Testarossas and 308s.)
But it was a wild day weather-wise! Despite the very favorable forecast, there were wet roads to start, but then it cleared off and became breezy. Then ominous clouds rolled in, and we heard (via a cell phone) that it was hailing not far away on Route 128! Then the sun shown again, but it became so windy that we had to add guy wires to our canopy. Then more sun, followed by rain squalls during the award ceremony (which kept the speeches nice and short). At the end of the day, the sun shown while we tore down the AONE canopy, and then it rained heavily on the drive home. Crazy.
Mainly, though, it was a most enjoyable day and there were enough automobili there to boggle the mind. Among these were some stunning Alfas, both old and new. (Well, not brand new, but you know what we mean.) Perhaps the highlight was AONE member Bud Brickmans drop-dead gorgeous Series One 1900CS Touring-bodied coupe that not only won first place in its class but also took the Peoples Choice Award!
Our club had purchased a new 10 x 10 canopy just prior to the event that worked quite well easy to set up and (marginally) transportable in a 105-series Alfa coupe. There were people buzzing through our "booth" all the time and we sold quite a few club shirts, coffee mugs, etc., gave away back issues of Velocissima, signed on several new members, and kibitzed.AONE Director and Italian Car Day committee member Jim Miga wishes
to thank all of the AONE members who participated in this event. Special thanks go out to
the judges who worked tirelessly in the hot sun for several hours without a break! They
are: Myron Barnett, Steve Silverstein, Jonathan Kirshtein, Bill Anderson, Carmine Tomas,
and Andy Kress. ![]()
