The Great Yankee Candle RunTop off your tank, pack a compass and water bottle, and meet me for the 2001 AONE/NET Tour to the Yankee Candle Factory and Car Museum in South Deerfield, Massachusetts. If youSaturday, October 13
have never been out to this terrific
and fun facility, you have a real treat in store for you; for those of you who have, this
will be your last chance to see the museum, since its presently slated for permanent
closure at the end of October! There are eighty classic and antique cars on display, and
the candle factory portion of the facility is a wonderful series of areas designed to look
like an alpine village, complete with an "oompah" band. There is also a
first-class restaurant and bakery/snack bar on the premises in case the ride there brings
out your appetite.
Did I mention the ride there? Well, this year tour-goers will meet me at the Royal Plaza Hotels parking lot (the Hotel is located on Route 31 South, just off Route 2 at exit 28, which is just west of Fitchburg) by 10 AM. First car off will be at 10:10. You will be given a map and a few "easy" questions to answer about your route. Its a nice, longish, all-backroads run of 64+ miles designed to allow road speeds (no stopping to look for clues and no 10 MPH driving), ending up in the Yankee Candle parking lot. Those who would prefer a straighter and shorter route (or those who need to bail) can opt to the major road (Route 2) and just meet the rest of us there. ETA of the first car at Yankee Candle is 12 noon (thats right, just in time for lunch). But do take the backroads, as the scenery is terrific, the colors will be peak, and there is only a mile or two of bumpy travel. You can even pack a picnic basket if you prefer.
You may recall from last months issue that the event was originally entitled "The Great Yankee Car Museum and Lost Brewery Tour". Well, I finally found the Lost Brewery, but if we were to take it in, we would need two days for the event. However, for those of you who might be interested, the Berkshire Brewery, located right across the street from the Car Museum, happens to hold its weekly tours at 1PM on Saturdays. Feel free to indulge!
So the general plan is to do some nice Alfa touring in the morning, grab some lunch, and then take in the Car Museum and Candle Factory in the afternoon, adjourning whenever the fancy strikes. Theres no need to registerjust show up! Dash plaques for the event will be given out to the first fifty cars. The entry fee is a mere $5 per car. Directions and a map will be provided to entrants upon arrival at the hotel parking lot. No rain dateits rain or shine. If you have any questions, give me a shout at 508-879-1881 or xpertcool@aol.com. See you there!
Kevin Murphy
[Kevin claims to be semi-serious about the compass, but personally I wouldnt worry about it. Come to think of it, Kevin coulda used a compass at the last AONE rallye, though... Ed.]
