Motorsport is governed by passion. There has been no greater love affair with the motor car than that of Italy and its crimson racing heritage. The famous machines of Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati still inspire the greatest following of all.

156 RacerIt’s obviously something that British Touring Car Championship racer Gary Ayles has noticed. His team is graduating from the one-make Vauxhall Vectra series to the Super Production National Saloon Championship with a pair of scarlet Alfa Romeo 156s — injecting the series with new color.

Ayles is confident that his outfit will start the season fighting. "We think we’re going to win races," he says. It’s not an empty promise. Perhaps the team’s masterstroke has been to forge strong links with the Italian Bigazzi preparation squad. "We’ll undertake all the modifications to the cars during the year," says Paolo Bigazzi. "It’s important to have Alfa Romeo in the NSC. It’s a very strong championship. That makes winning all the more prestigious."
