. . . My First Yellow ‘74 Spider?

by Dave Pratt

My very first Alfa was a pretty yellow ‘74 Spider that I bought just three years old, in 1977. I loved this car! But then in 1986, it had developed a couple of bubbles on the rockers, and I thought that I wanted a more civilized, enclosed sports car. So I sold it, to a young guy from Brookline (I think), and bought an ‘83 Porsche 944.

The 944 was a good, solid car but just never got my blood flowing, so in 1988 I replaced it with an ‘84 911. What can you say — it’s a 911 — fast, solid, chick-magnet.

The very next year, I spotted an ad in the Alfa Owner classifieds for a yellow ‘74 Spider, excellent shape, California car. Expecting it to be thousands of miles away, I glanced to the bottom of the ad — it was in Braintree! Ten miles from my house!

I went to take a look, and it was like deja vu! Like my old Spider but no rust! Needless to say, I bought it and sold the 911. I still own it, and they’ll have to pry my hands off the steering wheel when I die, if I have my way.

But what I’d love to know is: What became of my first ‘74? Is it still around the area? Wouldn’t it be great if my first Alfa and its twin could meet!

If you have a clue (or own the car!), please get in touch — 781-320-8208 or dave@dvpratt.com. Thanks!
