NHIS Title

A terrific time was had by all who made the trip to Loudon, NH on Saturday, August 14 to take in the vintage races and join together with other Alfisti at the annual Vintage Celebration at the New Hampshire International Speedway. About fifteen AONE members plus friends and family converged, not a bad turnout considering the distance involved and somewhat iffy weather.

Paul Glynn’s enormous race car trailer was our gathering spot, and with its canopy to protect us from the sun and (later) rain and the viewing platform on top, it made a great focal point for our activity. It turned out to be a very nice day, with a thunderstorm holding off until just after Paul and Jim Hayes finished their last race of the day - perfect timing!

Speaking of whom, both of our guys were extremely competitive all day long, despite the fact that Jim was breaking in a new engine and was limiting himself to 6000 RPM (poor fella). Paul’s still my friend despite spraying me with gravel as he was taking a corner a wee bit wide.

Jim reports that "The racing on Sunday was in a drizzle, not hard rain. The classes were rearranged into a group of ‘slower’ cars and fast cars. Paul and Sid Herman ended up 1-2 in the ‘slow’ group. I tried to run in the back of the fast group, but they wouldn’t let me. Moved me to the third row, started 6th, finished 4th in a drizzle, never used more than 6500."

A big tip-of-the-helmet goes to Angeljean Chiaramida, who came up with an abundance of great food to provide us with sustenance throughout the day, and to Tom Lesko, who provided a wide assortment of beverages (and other goodies), much appreciated as it was a very thirsty day.

This is a marvelous event and one that I strongly urge you to attend next year! There’s plenty of parking for everybody right in the infield pit area, and we were all able to park our Alfas near our gathering spot. There were over 80 vintage race cars (plus motorcycles) participating, and you can freely wander among them - it’s better than a car show! And the sounds that these wonderful cars make out on the track is indescribable! Make a mental note to take it in next year (don’t worry - I’ll remind you).

One question that kept recurring throughout the day, though: Does the term "vintage racers" refer to the cars or to the drivers?
