THIS STORY APPEARED in Automobile Quarterly in 1972. It is a well-researched story about auto importer Max Hoffman and how he influenced the European car market and industry in the United States following World War II. He also had a say in what models should be sold here and their design. He had close ties with Alfa Romeo, BMW, Volkswagen, and many other makes, some of which eventually failed. He even had Frank Lloyd Wright design a showroom on Park Avenue!

Enjoy the read!

P.S. It has been written that Max Hoffman was Dustin Hoffman's uncle, and that he supplied the Duettos that were used in filming The Graduate. I have not seen proof of this, and it's likely an urban legend.
